Me Myself And I - De La Soul

This song is a classic from the spectrum of alternative hip-hop. As is this album, hip-hop was a hell of a lot different back then. Except usually you hear about all those gangster rappers from the 90's, back when gangster rap was good. When you look at acts like this, or A Tribe Called Quest, you know it is gonna be light feel good jams. Released in 1989, 3 Feet High And Rising feels different right from the start, but we'll stick to this track today.
The beat is definitely the first thing that you notice, it is funky is so many ways. The keyboard and other raw sounds make the chorus stand out. That classic cut, "can you count?", and those sweet vocals are cut up perfectly! The drums are fanastic as well, if you haven't heard a good boom-bip in a while, this is a track for head bobbing. I can only imagine how many people have danced to this. Then it gets down to the piano tune and that sweet piece of funk you hear in the background. Man! Beautiful track, and some great samples flipped! The scratches were absolutely ill!
The raps are wonderfully written, they flow perfectly with the music and give off the perfect vibe! The three MC's are gonna bring a different style than anyone is used to at this point. They speak with positive words, no violence, no guns, just no struggle. We are here to have fun. Instead of saying something vulgar they'd rather say, "that is pure plug bull!" And much like the Tribe we aren't hear to see who kills it either. That is what I love about alternative hip-hop, which is very much different from today's alternative section. The elements of music felt more similar across hip-hop back in the day. As for certain the difference between good and bad hip-hop is ridiculous these days. You switch from the underground to the radio and my goodness I don't even know what I'm listening to. And with jams like these, that stay fun even till today, we won't have to return to the radio till we're ready!
